Remember, always lock before you leave
Most burglars are opportunistic - they look for an easy way to get in that won't take long or arouse suspicion, so many try the front door first. Last year over, 5,000 people were burgled because they didn't lock their front door.

Think how a burglar thinks
Burglary is generally an opportunist crime. Burglar’s usually select targets that offer the best opportunity to gain entry undetected. A building that appears unoccupied and insecure is far more likely to be targeted than one which is properly secured:

Don’t
• Leave side gates open
• Leave accessible windows open
• Leave ladders available
• Leave garden tools available

Each of these makes access much easier and will attract the attention of a prospective burglar.

If you live in a flat or apartment with an entry phone system be careful not to grant entry to people you do not know. Also be aware not to be 'tailgated'

into the building.

Make it look like your house is occupied
If you’re leaving the house for a period of time consider the following:

• Install timers which switch lights or radios on and off automatically.
• Ask a friend to clear your letter box.
• Ask a neighbour to park on your drive.
• If going out after dark, draw the curtains and leave some lights on.
